do i have to prune hibiscuses or cut down the branches, or will the leaves just comeback.
Hibiscuses?
There are 2 types of hardy hibiscus. One the tree form known as the Rose of Sharon, or Althea Bush. I have one that hasn’t been trimmed in several years. There is nothing wrong with it and it blooms great. The other is more herbaceous. It dies all the way back to the ground. Therefore you have to cut the dead back and let it start over the next year. It can grow to from six to 12 feet high depending on the species. The Althea tolerates cutting back to how ever far you need to cut it back.

Reply:If your pruning for frost damage, wait to see whether the leaves return in spring. If they don't return on part of the branch that part has died cut back to leaves on the stems. If you are pruning for volume give them a medium prune all over and this will thicken the bush up. Wait till after the spring flowering.
Reply:Do you have the hardy ones? I have 2, and I saw the stems from last year off about 2" above the ground as soon as the snow melts. Those stems won't do any more.
Reply:I do cut my branches back otherwise they tend to get leggy but again not being a pro, that may not be the "correct" thing to do. Happy Spring !
