Hibiscus cannabinus is known as "Kenaf". Kenaf is a fibre crop and quite legal. A field of kenaf is sometimes invites unintended visits from the legal community who are unamused when it is determined that they have busted a legal crop.

The link below will provide you with additional and probably more information than you'd care to know.

Cheers!
Reply:No, it is not illegal
Reply:It is hibiscus moscheuto,NOT hibiscus syriacus which prorockgirl claimed it to be.Totally legal, nice plant, dies to the ground in winter (zone 6) and comes back from root the next year.
Reply:A hibiscus is not cannibis. There are one or two foliage plants that resemble cannibis, but if you bought it from a retailer, it would not be cannibis sativa, or marijuana.

A hibiscus has dark green, flat leaves that are shaped like a tear drop or a double elipse. It has large, colorful flowers, and is often refered to as a Rose of Sharon.
Reply:Cannabus is the name for marijuna, and marijuna has five leaves, not sure about the flower. I'd pick another hibiscus!!
Reply:Like most of the other postings for your questions, I agree that this plant is not marijuana...but it is in the same family.

What I would like for you to consider is the fact that it looks enough like marijuana to trigger a gung-ho law enforcement officer or a nosy neighboor into reporting you for pot (even though you are innocent.)

Sweetie, I don't think it would be worth the risk.
Reply:No it's not pot. It's just a harmless hibiscus.
Reply:I like oaktalkers answer, but I would also like to put in my 2 cents!

Hibiscus (kenaf) in your picture is not marijuana, nor is it related. They are in different families, hibiscus in the malvaceae, marijuana in the cannabaceae. Kenaf is grown in other countries and has many wonderful uses!! It is definitely not illegal, but like someone mentioned, in areas where it is grown on large scale, police often mistake it for cannibus. I don't think you'll have a problem with a couple of plants!

Buy it, it is beautiful!
Reply:No, its not pot. I have a hibiscus with the same leaf type and big wide red blooms called Texas Star Hibiscus. The flower is definetly hibiscus because I have had ones with the same blooms but different leaves. Hibiscus is not illegal.
Reply:Yes, this is a distant relative of marijuana (cannabis) but it's not illegal.
Reply:nah can't be
Reply:That plant is of the hemp family. I would check wiith your local garden center or botany books.
Reply:its in the same family as the cannibus sativa (which is marijuana), but is not technically illegal.
Reply:if it has the word cannibus in it honey yes it is a pot plant cannibus is another word for marijuana
Reply:no it isn't illegal .............at least i don't think so lol
Reply:Yes. It's pot.
Reply:No, it's not illegal. It is a hibiscus that is named for the leaf similarity to the illegal plant.
