We have a hibiscus that I would like to prepare for the winter months.?
instead grow cactus
Reply:I always recommend that people grow their hibiscus in pots....I have several and right before the first frost ( I live in zone 5 ) I move them to the spare bedroom and slack down on the watering. Don't worry, the leaves will fall. From late October til the danger of late frost, I soak them maybe once a month. Then after danger of frost, I put them outside and water maybe once a week. They come back so quickly you wouldn't believe it and I have the largest blooms in the city.
Reply:Depending on the size of the hibiscus, and or, if it is a tropical hibiscus you could dig it up, transplant into a pot and overwinter inside. If that is not feasible you will need to take steps to provide some protection from the winter temps. and wind. That is to say if you have a hibiscus species which is hardy in our area. If not sure, contact the nursery from which you purchased it. To help insulate the roots apply a 4" layer or mulch around the base of the shrub. Apply an anti-desiccant product, Wilt-Pruf, to the stems after the leaves fall off , this will prevent wind burn. For further protection, place stakes around the shrub and wrap with burlap. Water about once a week during dry periods.
