Hibiscus havnt bloomed yet?

i have hibiscus in my backyard and there one year old, i put them in last year around this time when they blooming like crazy so far not even a leaf this year. i live in houston so the winters arent shrub killers. could the heat have killed them last year? could the winter have killed them? are they just late bloomers and any ideas to spark some life

also have a bradford pear tree that hasnt bloomed in the back either yet the front one is fine is it dead also?

Hibiscus do not like to get too dry, but they are also very hardy, normally. Some varieties are tropical and can be killed by the winter (I keep the tropical in the garage over the winter - is goes dormant, but I cannot leave it out). But I am zone 7 and the Hibiscus that stays out has only just put out some leaves - the wild hibiscus is still totally asleep for now and I am in zone 7B. They are late risers, in other words. LOL

The pear in back may not be getting enough sun or might be competeing with larger trees for water and nutrients - see how much sun it gets compared to the front yard - once the other leaves come out on the trees in the yard, go out on a sunny day and put a 4"x4" piece of paper on a stick and put it near the tree - check each hour to see if the sun is on it or not - if there are fewer hours of sun on the pear that does not bloom, that is probably your problem, otherwise, try fertizing the one in the back.
Reply:I don't know about Houston, but here, in OH, my hardy hibiscus doesn't show any sign of life until late May, and sometimes June.
Reply:Take a close look at the buds on the trees, pull one off and tear it apart, is it alive or brown and dryed up? Trim a bit of branch off and look for life....this is how you can tell if it is still dormate or dead.
Reply:hibiscus, typically regardless of strain, will take a while to show signs of top growth. i have rose mallow in my garden and they are also in their winter 'sleeping' state. the sun will stay out longer and longer in the coming weeks, and that will be what triggers the top growth.
Reply:Hibiscus bloom on new growth. Your plant may not be ready to produce until the weather warms up some.
