I bet you are in SoCal as am I. We had one of those 17 yr frosts this year. The best thing to do is WAIT to prune! One needs to wait until threat of frost has passed. We are still in winter, people! If you do prune now and a little growth comes out and we do get a weird frost, it could kill the whole plant! Those damaged branches are protecting the plant now. I have lots of frost damage at my house too. I KNOW it is hard to not do anything. Be patient. I was happy to see little sprouts on my Brugmansias. But I will wait until maybe the 2nd week of March to prune off the dead branches. .
Good luck.
My hibiscus was heavily frosted this year. will it come back, should i prune or cut it back completely ?t?
I too have a hibiscus that was frost bitten this year. I waited to see if the leaves would begin to sprout and sure enouigh they did. Now I will go through and prune off everythin beyond the new growth points.
Reply:prune it, after ALL likelihood of another frost is gone.
If you don't see something new when weather warms, its probably a goner.
Reply:What kind of hibiscus? There are 2. One is a house plant. If yours is one of these, its dead. If yours is a perennial, like mine, it can withstand freezing, snow, ice., etc. Mine grows 12' tall every year, and gives me a month of red blossoms. It then freezes and goes dormant. It is the LAST thing to peep through in the spring.
Reply:Prune it. It will just come back late.
