In Purple Hibiscus, Kambili is a 15-year old Nigerian girl whose wealthy father is a generous, respected and politically active man. He's also a Catholic fundamentalist who keeps tight rein and control of his household, disciplining his children for sins, both real and perceived. After a military coup, her father sends Kambili and her brother to stay with their aunt, where they find a different lifestyle, with lauighter, music, freedom, and new ideas. In a new era of repression, both at home and in the country, these ideals might be a fragile as the purple hibiscus that grows in her aunt's garden. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel has received positive reviews and has been nominated for the Booker Prize and the Orange Prize. The Orange Prize review says, "An impressively mature debut. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie handles her subject matter including history and politics, love and child abuse with astonishing deftness and an entirely unpreachy honesty."
