Will my hibiscus ever bloom again?

i have a hibiscus plant in a pot. i bought it last year. i live in michigan so i can't plant it outside. i kept it living over the winter but it did worry me because it wasn't as leafy as it was when i bought it. now its better but no flowers yet. it did bloom last year. and it had a couple in march of this year. must of been warm enough. i plan to put it into a bigger pot once i can get more soil. (don't have enough right now) my mom thinks maybe not enough room for the roots is why its taking so long to grow leaves. maybe the same for blooms? or maybe its just not warm and sunny enough yet? even though its pretty much late may. michigan's weather has been crazy in april and so far this month. back and forth from cold to warm. but i question: am i just going to have a plant of leaves? or will i eventually see my pretty orange flowers?
Will my hibiscus ever bloom again?
Winter does that to this Tropical plant. Its normal.

Re pot in the fall before you bring it in for the winter. Really be rough with the root cutting, Cut all brown "old " root's. It will be alot , you'll see. Its a tough plant , it can take it. I live in Acapulco and Mexico has these things growing neglected everywhere.

Don't water in the winter, and it will tell you when it needs it in the growing season.

No way to give it too much sun !!! You saw its winter , lack of sun look ...........

Trust me Michigan in May is not ideal for this tropical plant. It likes 90 degrees , high 80's and Michigan isn't there yet.

Its probably ready for a good dose of fertilizer though.

Its a tough plant, and what you described is what I would expect it to look and act like.
Reply:Hibiscus is a tropical plant. First of all they cannot tolerate temperatures below 40 very well. I have several of these lovely plants and trees, and even though I live in Tx, they must be brought in during winter. The leaves always fall completely in winter, but come spring you should fertilize early. They also need FULL sun!! You will have mediocre plants at best if they do not receive full sun and lots of it all day! The heat does not faze them as long as they get plenty of water.
Reply:Don't change the soil and pot until it is healthy again.

Hibiscus will act this way in the house during the winter months.

Do not fertilize it for now, but keep it watered. In about two or three weeks, mix in some slow release fertilizer. We like Osmocote. Be sure to read the directions. Before you know it, your hibiscus will be pretty again.

By the way, most do not bloom until hot July. It is too cold to bloom for now. The nights need to be in the 70's.

We also use Miracle-Gro's Bloom Booster after the nights get into the high 60's and the 70's for all our plants once per month. Be sure to read the directions.
Reply:I have hibiscus lining my fence. Over 30 of them. There are two different kinds of hibiscus. Tall ones and shorter ones. They do require a lot of sun and if yours is growing tall, I would get a deeper pot for the roots. They are very durable but go into shock easily. They almost always come back though. It may take a while for them to blossom so I would spritz them on the leaves about twice a week with miracle grow and give them very little water about once a week. They should come back though.
